Eight days is enough for Thailand if you split them well, and wasted if you try to see everything. A question we hear often: do we combine Bangkok, Phuket and Krabi all together? The answer is yes, but on condition that you put in two days of real rest, do not cram two boat trips into one day, and account for transfer time between destinations instead of forgetting it.
This programme gives you each day in detail, with alternatives for families, couples and those who prefer calm, and shows what to book in advance and what to leave for the moment. Read it as an adjustable plan according to your season and sea conditions.
Quick answer:
- A balanced programme: three nights in Bangkok, then four nights between Phuket and Krabi, then departure.
- Leave at least two calm days, as this protects the trip from exhaustion.
- Island trips depend on sea conditions, so do not put them on the last day of your trip.
- You can settle for one beach destination if you want more calm.
- Book domestic flights and hotels in winter early.
Who is this programme for?
It suits families, couples and groups of friends who want to combine city and beach in one week and accept two domestic flights. It is less suited to those who want total relaxation with no moving, who settle for one beach destination. If you have not set the season, read best time to visit Thailand, and for the wider picture our Thailand travel guide.
Day 1: Arrive in Bangkok
The goal is settling in, not exploring. After arrival and transfer to the hotel, take some rest, then stroll a little in the neighbourhood and have a nearby dinner. Bangkok is a big crowded city, and a calm start lets you adjust.
Tip: choose a hotel near the Skytrain or metro. You will save time daily.
Day 2: Bangkok: temples and the river
Start early with the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Wat Arun, keeping to modest dress. After lunch take a break at the hotel, then a boat ride on the Chao Phraya just before sunset. The evening is free for dinner at markets or restaurants.
Do not try to cover every temple. Two temples with enough time beat five in a rush.

Day 3: Bangkok: markets and shopping
You can spend the morning at a floating market or a tour of traditional markets, and the evening in a big shopping centre, which suits families during hot hours. This day is flexible, so swap it by your interest: shopping, a museum or a quiet day.
In the evening pack for the move to Phuket and lighten your luggage as much as possible.
Day 4: Move to Phuket
A domestic flight from Bangkok to Phuket, then a transfer to the hotel. Leave the rest of the day for the beach, the pool and a seafood dinner. This day is for adjusting, so do not book a boat trip or long tour on it.
Tip: choose a hotel near the beach you prefer. Some Phuket beaches are calm and some lively, so ask about the character of the beach before booking.

Day 5: The island trip
A full day to the islands near Phuket, such as the Phi Phi Islands, by boat with swimming, snorkelling and lunch aboard or on the island. Check sea conditions before booking, choose a good organised operator and carry sunscreen and a small rain jacket.
Do not put this trip on the last day of your trip. If it is cancelled because of weather, leave yourself a backup. For families with small children, ask about sailing time, whether the seats are shaded and whether suitable life jackets are available.

Day 6: A calm day or the move to Krabi
Option one: a full day at the resort, pool, beach, an unhurried lunch and a spa, then the move to Krabi the next day. Option two: the move to Krabi in the morning, spending the second half of the day relaxing.
This day gives the week its right rhythm. Do not drop it.

Day 7: Krabi
Krabi is calmer and more scenic. A boat trip to nearby islands and small beaches, swimming and snorkelling, then sunset on the beach. If you are not fond of boat trips, enjoy a calm beach, a walk and photography.
This day suits couples especially, and is flexible by sea and weather.
Day 8: Departure
Free time then the transfer to the airport with a comfortable time margin. If your flight is from Bangkok, calculate the domestic return flight from Krabi and the connection margin precisely, and do not make the two flights back to back with no time.

Alternative versions by trip type
For families with small children: leave Krabi and settle for Bangkok and Phuket, or lighten the island trip to a nearby half-day tour, and add a day at the resort.
For couples and honeymooners: replace the third Bangkok day with an extra night in Krabi, and add a private beach dinner and a spa session.
For groups of friends: add an activity trip such as diving or speedboats, and share the cost of the car.
For those who prefer calm: drop Bangkok and make the week between Phuket and Krabi only, or Krabi alone.
For those travelling with older relatives: reduce exposed temples in the heat, take a car between sights and choose hotels without many stairs.
What to book in advance

Common mistakes in an eight-day programme
- Putting the island trip on the last day: if it is cancelled there is no backup.
- Booking two boat trips in one day: ends in exhaustion.
- Dropping the rest day: which is what protects the trip.
- Staying far from the beach: hours are lost on the road.
- A tight connection time at departure.
