At the airport you open your bag to check the passport and find you forgot the charger. At the hotel you discover the headache medicine stayed at home. At the destination you carry a heavy bag of clothes you will not use. Every traveler knows these moments, and their cause is one: late preparation with no list. Whoever prepares their bag two days before travel with a written list travels with less stress and more comfort.

This guide is a practical list arranging everything you carry, split by importance, with tips to lighten weight, and extra lists for families and children and for beach and cold trips. Print it or copy it into your phone, tick each item and adjust it for your destination.

Quick answer:

  • Start with documents, money and medicines, as these are not forgotten and not easily replaced.
  • Prepare the bag at least two days before travel, and gather documents a week before.
  • Carry the essentials in hand luggage: documents, medicines, a charger and spare clothes.
  • Choose multi-use clothes instead of lots of pieces.
  • Adjust the list by destination, season and number of travellers.

Why do we need a list?

Because the mind prefers to rely on memory, and memory forgets under travel pressure. A list protects you from forgetting and eases stress, and helps lighten the bag because you know exactly what you carry. It also helps on the way back, so you check you left nothing at the hotel.

And the list is not rigid. A trip to snow differs from a trip to an island, and a traveler with children needs extra items. So we give you a fixed core and then additions. If you have not set your destination yet, read best family travel destinations.

Documents and money: always the most important

This list comes first because forgetting one item can ruin the trip:

  • Passport: with enough validity and blank pages, and the visa if required.
  • Flight tickets: a paper and electronic copy.
  • Hotel and tour bookings: in detail with contact numbers.
  • National ID or residence permit.
  • Payment cards and some cash in the destination currency, and tell your bank you are travelling.
  • Insurance details and emergency numbers.
  • A copy of documents saved on your phone and in your email, and another on paper in a separate bag.

For the general visa documents see the visa documents checklist.

Health and medicines

Do not rely on buying medicine at the destination, as you may not find the same name:

  • Your essential medicines with prescriptions if needed, in their original packaging.
  • Common medicines: for headache, fever, stomach, allergy, diarrhoea and dizziness.
  • Bandages and antiseptic and a small first-aid kit.
  • Sunscreen, lip balm and mosquito repellent.
  • Hand sanitiser and masks.
  • Your personal health supplies.

For children: fever medicine suited to their ages, a thermometer and the medicines they are used to. Read the airline's instructions on medicines in hand luggage if they are liquids or needles.

Electronics

  • Phone and charger and a spare cable.
  • A power bank suited to flight rules.
  • A plug adapter suited to the destination.
  • Headphones and a reader if you like.
  • A camera and memory cards if you are a photographer.
  • Downloaded maps and apps before travel.

Note that power banks are usually carried in hand luggage, not checked, so check your airline's rules.

Clothes: fewer pieces, more uses

The golden rule: multi-use clothes that coordinate with each other. Choose close colours so pieces swap.

  • Core clothes by number of days, assuming you reuse some.
  • Light layers for changes: a jacket or sweater over the shirt.
  • A coat suited to the season: warm for winter, and a light rain jacket the rest of the year.
  • Comfortable walking shoes you have tried before, and a light pair if needed.
  • Modest clothes for visiting religious sites.
  • Swimwear if your trip includes a pool or beach.
  • Sleepwear and underwear enough, with one extra piece.
  • A hat and sunglasses.

Useful items that make the trip easier

  • A small backpack for daily outings instead of carrying the big bag.
  • A refillable water bottle.
  • Bags for dirty laundry and bags to protect items from getting wet.
  • A luggage lock and a clear tag with your name.
  • Wet and dry wipes.
  • A pen for filling in entry forms.
  • A neck pillow for long flights if you like.

Additions for families and children

If you travel with children, add:

  • Extra clothes more than usual for each child, as small accidents happen.
  • Small toys, books and drawing for waiting and flying time.
  • Snacks familiar to picky children.
  • Nappies, wipes and infant supplies enough for at least the first two days.
  • A car seat or carrier if needed, and ask about availability at the destination.
  • Children's medicines and a thermometer.
  • A life jacket suited to children if you will go boating, and check availability.

Additions by trip type

For the beach and islands: extra swimwear, a quick-dry towel, water shoes, a waterproof phone pouch, strong sunscreen and a wide hat.

For mountains and snow: warm layered clothes, gloves and a woollen hat, water-resistant shoes, lip balm and moisturiser, and sunglasses.

For cities and shopping: comfortable shoes for long walking, a safe shoulder bag and empty space in your bag for purchases.

For religious and cultural tours: modest clothes, a scarf and easy-to-remove shoes.

How to lighten your bag?

  1. Check the permitted weight before packing, and do not wait for the airport.
  2. Wear the heaviest on the journey: the coat and thick shoes.
  3. Choose light quick-dry clothes that can be washed and reused.
  4. Move liquids to small containers.
  5. Leave space in the bag for purchases.
  6. Put the heaviest near the wheels.
  7. Print the list and tick it before closing the bag.

Common mistakes in packing

  • Packing on the last night: leads to forgetting.
  • Carrying lots of clothes you will not use.
  • Putting documents and medicines in checked luggage.
  • Forgetting the plug adapter.
  • Not downloading maps and apps before travel.
  • Not leaving space for purchases.
  • Ignoring liquid and battery limits in hand luggage.
